Memory Verse: Week of July 2nd

Week of July 2nd

2 Corinthians 5:21

[21] For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV)

[Context:  This is a great verse on imputation and substitution.  To impute means to put something in someone’s account.  For example, Adam’s sin was imputed to our account.  (all his offspring – all he represented).  But this verse reminds us that there is a “second Adam” – another representative who substituted himself for us.  Jesus, the only one who knew no sin, was treated on the cross as if he was guilty of all the sin of everyone who would believe (though he is not).   And I am now treated as if I lived as righteous as Jesus (though I did not).  In Jesus, I am treated as Jesus deserves to be treated.  His righteousness is imputed to me, even as my sin is imputed to him.  This is an amazing transaction of grace from God who came in the flesh for this very purpose – “for our sake.” ]
